Comedian George Lopez’ ex-wife Ann Serano, filed for divorce way back in November of 2011. Unfortunately for Lopez, he is still having to deal with the rest of the divorce process that has followed almost a year later. Serano cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind her filing for divorce in California after 17 years of marriage and one child together.
A Year later, both parties are still hashing out the finalities of the divorce. Serano wants to dip her hand into Lopez’ retirement fund, and Lopez is apparently not too happy about this development. Court documents filed in Los Angeles last week show that the two have agreed to split the actors AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Actors) retirement fund 50/50.
Now this is where it gets tricky.
Their was no prenuptial agreement between the two, California state says that the fund be split 50/50 from the portion that was made by Lopez during the marriage from 1993 to 2011.
This is just yet another instance of how divorce can be a long and lengthy process. With so many stipulations, paperwork and fees that circulate before anything is finalized, it can be straining on both parties involved. We see this far too often, especially with high profile, celebrity divorces. Money is usually at the root of everything, even if divorces are cited as “amicable”. Whether one party or both parties has a vast amount of green in the bank, there always seems to be a fight to see which party can obtain the bulk of it and quite frankly, that is how most divorce lawyers and attorneys are trained to approach a typical divorce case.

Where did you get your information? This couple had no pre-nuptial agreement. When Ann married George he has $5 in his pocket and she had all the money. This was all settled a year ago. The retirement part had to go through the courts and took this long. California law says they split everything… Including retirement funds 50/50. I know this couple…there was no fight about that ..it is the law!
Mary,
Thank you for bringing that to our attention. We were incorrect and the blog has been updated with that information.
Thanks again.
