We all know that fifty percent of marriages end in divorce, but what we don’t know is what to do with the ring once that divorce is final. Here are some of the most common things to do with your ring after you’ve filed for divorce.
Keep It
Regardless of whether the marriage ended, a majority of divorcees are opting to keep their rings as a reminder. For some it’s a reminder of what they did wrong and not to repeat it, and for others it’s a reminder of a better time with someone they once loved. A growing trend is to make the ring into a necklace and wear it as a constant reminder.
Throw It
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are those who want to purge themselves of all memories associated with their failed marriage, so they may start fresh again. Getting rid of the ring in such a grand and dramatic way can be absolutely freeing for your mind.
Throwing your wedding ring in the ocean is the most common place to throw a wedding ring, but it is by no means the only place. Mountains, lakes, down the toilet, and places the couple used to frequent round out the list of the most common places to throw your wedding ring after filing divorce forms.
Sell it
The most practical, and arguably the most popular, thing you can do with your wedding ring post-divorce, is to sell it. Selling your wedding ring will still give you that closure of knowing it’s finally over, but it will also give you some extra cash in your pocket. If you see yourself getting married again, you can always hold on to the ring and sell it in order to buy a new ring.
